Why Tattoo Aftercare is So Important at 808 STUDIOS

Getting a tattoo is like creating a little piece of art on your skin. But for it to really shine and stay looking amazing, you’ve gotta give it some TLC while it heals. If you skip out on aftercare, you risk fading, scabbing, or even infection—no thank you! That’s why we always make sure you’ve got everything you need to help your tattoo heal the right way.

At 808 Studios, we’re not just about giving you an epic tattoo; we want it to stay epic. That’s why we’ve created a super easy-to-follow Aftercare Guide that we give to every client after each session, packed with everything you need to know—what to do, what not to do, and tips for keeping your tattoo looking fresh.

What Happens While Your Tattoo Heals?

Every tattoo heals in its own time, but on average, you can expect the full healing process to take around 2-3 weeks. Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on with your tattoo during that time:

  • Days 1-2: After your tattoo, your skin will be a bit red and swollen. It’s totally normal, and we’ll cover it with a bandage to keep it protected.

  • Days 3-7: This is when you’ll start to notice peeling or flaking. It’s tempting, but don’t pick at it! The healing process is happening underneath, and you’ve got to let it do its thing.

  • Days 8-14: You’ll probably start to notice your tattoo looking healed on the surface. It’s still working its magic beneath, though, so keep caring for it until it's fully healed.

  • Weeks 3-4: Your tattoo will be fully healed, but don’t forget to keep it moisturized and protected from the sun.

How to Take Care of Your Tattoo for Long-Term Quality - our Best tips from 808 STUDIOS

Now, let’s get into how to take care of your tattoo to make sure it stays looking 🔥 Each time you get a tattoo with us, we hand you a custom Aftercare Guide we’ve designed just for you. It’s got all the important details—like the dos and don’ts—to help you keep your tattoo fresh. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to do:

1. Clean It, Moisturize It

Your tattoo needs to stay clean, so gently wash it with fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Don’t scrub—just softly pat it dry with a clean towel. After that, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or tattoo balm to keep it hydrated. Don’t overdo it, though—a little goes a long way!

2. Don’t Scratch or Pick!

We know it’s tempting, but no picking or scratching! It’s totally normal for your tattoo to itch or flake, but if you scratch or pick at it, you could mess up the design or even cause scarring. If you really can’t resist, just tap your tattoo gently to relieve the itch.

3. Wear Loose Clothes

Tight clothing can rub against your tattoo and irritate it. For the first few days, try wearing loose clothes that won’t press against your tattoo. This gives your skin some space to breathe.

4. Stay Out of the Sun

Sun exposure is a big no-no when your tattoo is healing. It can cause your ink to fade or even cause irritation. If you have to go out in the sun, keep your tattoo covered or apply sunscreen once it's fully healed.

5. No Swimming or Soaking!!

As much as you want to jump in the pool or take a long bath, you gotta hold off for a bit. Saltwater and chlorine can mess with the healing process. Avoid submerging your tattoo in water for at least a few weeks, until it’s fully healed.

6. Stay Hydrated and Eat Right

Believe it or not, staying hydrated and eating well can actually help your tattoo heal faster! Your body needs nutrients to regenerate skin cells and keep your tattoo looking fresh, so drink water, eat some veggies, and avoid too much junk food.

What NOT to Do:

The Don’ts of Tattoo Aftercare from a Tattoo Shop in Halifax

Here’s a quick rundown of the things you definitely want to avoid while your tattoo heals:

  • No scented lotions or alcohol on your tattoo. These can mess with the healing process or irritate your skin.

  • Don’t pick at scabs or peel the skin off. Let your tattoo shed naturally, trust the process.

  • No hot tubs, pools, or ocean swims. These can expose your tattoo to bacteria and slow down healing.

  • No tight clothing. Let your tattoo breathe and avoid things that could rub against it.
